Abstract
It is with great pride that I write this editorial at a pivotal moment in the medical history of our region. The Journal of Sulaimani Medical College (JSMC) is honoured to mark the successful establishment of the first liver transplantation program in Sulaimani, a landmark achievement that symbolises the transformation of our health system into one capable of delivering advanced tertiary care.
Since 2024, in collaboration with Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and under the joint efforts of skilled surgeons from Iran and our committed local team, six liver transplant surgeries have been successfully performed at Anwar Shyxa Hospital. This collaboration represents not only a clinical milestone but also a powerful model of international medical partnership, capacity building, and knowledge transfer.
As Editor-in-Chief, I believe it is the duty of JSMC to document and disseminate such critical advancements. Liver transplantation is a complex, multidisciplinary field that spans hepatology, surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, immunology, radiology, and post-operative rehabilitation. Our journal welcomes submissions that cover the technical, clinical, ethical, and logistical aspects of transplantation medicine, particularly those informed by local context and early experiences in our setting.
For the next issue, we will feature several contributions on liver disease burden, transplantation logistics, post-transplant complications, and the development of local surgical infrastructure. These papers aim to foster dialogue among clinicians, health planners, and policy-makers about how to scale, sustain, and ethically manage organ transplantation in Iraq.
I express my sincere gratitude to all colleagues, local and international, who contributed to making this vision a reality. Let this be the beginning of a sustained effort to provide life-saving interventions to patients with end-stage liver disease and to build a future where advanced care is accessible and locally led.
