ABSTRACT

Background

Male breast diseases account for a small proportion of the total referrals to breast clinics. The majority are benign

and the most common is gynecomastia.

       Objectives

       To identify the spectrum of male breast diseases in patients visiting Sulaimani Breast Clinic, including patients` characteristics, clinical features, imaging, diagnosis and treatment.

       Methods

       A retrospective descriptive study was conducted over 10 years, from 1st Jan 2008 to 31st Dec 2018, in Sulaimani Breast Clinic, Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, where 210 male patients visited the clinic, from which 208 patients were included in the study after exclusion. Data collected and studied included patient characteristics, history, physical examination, mammography and ultrasonography, core needle biopsy, fine needle aspiration cytology, biopsy reports, final diagnosis, different lines of treatment and follow-up.

     Results

      Patient`s ages ranged from 13-103 years, the mean age was 49.36 years (± 16.673). The most common presenting symptom was breast enlargement (60.1%). Imaging was not performed frequently, mammography was performed in (6.73%) and ultrasonography in (16.34%) of the patients. Core needle biopsy was performed in (2.88%) and fine needle aspiration cytology in (4.32%) of the patients. The majority (98.08%) of the patients had benign breast diseases and the most common diagnosis was gynecomastia (61%). The minority (1.92%) of the patients had breast cancer.

     Conclusion

     Male patients account for a small proportion of patients visiting Sulaimani Breast Clinic. The most common male breast diseases were benign breast diseases, of which the commonest was gynecomastia. Breast cancer was a rare entity in male patients visiting Sulaimani Breast Clinic.
