Background
Genital warts are a familiar contagious sexually transmitted disease caused by the human papillomavirus.
Cryotherapy drives ice crystal formation in the cell, causing the cellular part to hurt and cell death. Podophyllin
is an anti-mitotic agent with a direct effect on epithelial cells.
Objectives
This investigation aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of podophyllin solution versus liquid nitrogen cryotherapy
in treating genital warts in females.
Patients and methods
A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 50 cases of genital warts attending the outpatient dermatology
clinic at Rizgary Teaching Hospital in Erbil City between April 2020 and April 2021. Patients were divided
into two groups randomly; study medication was used once weekly until the lesion cleared completely for a
maximum period of eight weeks. Patients whose warts were removed were followed entirely for up to two
months to defi ne the recurrence rate.
Results
The normal period of entire clearance was four weeks for cryotherapy and fi ve weeks for the podophyllin group
(p:0.047). The recurrence speeds were (20% and 28.6%) for podophyllin and cryotherapy groups, respectively.
Cryotherapy patients encountered a particularly greater number of local infl ammatory responses than the
podophyllin group.
Conclusion
Cryotherapy produced a higher clearance rate than podophyllin for genital warts, and podophyllin has fewer
side effects.
