Background
Compliance behavior depends on the specifi c situation, like the nature of the illness and the treatment program.
Objecrives
Determine the rate of drug compliance in families caring for a child or adolescent with epilepsy and describe
some associated factors.
Methods
Three hundred patients with epilepsy aged between 1 and 14 who were attending the epilepsy consultation
clinic in Dr. Jamal Ahmad Rashid, a pediatric teaching hospital in Sulaymani, were studied and interviewed.
Results
According to their parental report, drug compliance was satisfactory in 217(72.3%) of patients and poor in
83(27.7%) of patients. Age, gender, residency of the patients, duration, and type of epilepsy, number of drugs,
associated illnesses, size of the families of epileptic children, side effects of the drugs, and seeking nonmedical treatments, did not signifi cantly infl uence the drug compliance. The poor socioeconomic state of
their families and forms of drugs signifi cantly affected drug compliance, each p.value of them was=0.001, and
(0.010), respectively, while signifi cant statistical values were set at
p≤0.05.
Conclusion
In this study, drug compliance was satisfactory in 72% of patients. There was a signifi cant association between
drug compliance and the socioeconomic state of the patients’ families and antiepileptic drug forms.
