Abstract

Background
Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan parasite that causes ocular toxoplasmosis and retinochoroiditis,
which may be complicated and produce lesions within the retina.
Objectives
To determine the prevalence of ocular toxoplasmosis and lesions among ocular infected patients.
Materials and Methods
A cross-sectional study of serology and fundus screening was performed in Sulaymaniyah City. From October
2021 to April 2022, 175 persons with ocular infection were collected and examined for the presence of T.
gondii serologically by ELISA. Also, the retinal examination was performed using fundus photography.
Result
Serologically, 81 (46.2 %) cases were found to have IgM, IgG, or both of them. 11 (13.5 %) cases were reported
that had lesions in their eyes. According to the results, women were more infected with lesions than men, and
lesions were more prevalent in the elderly population. The Toxoplasmic chorioretinal lesion size and their
status were studied.
Conclusion
The study concluded that the source of infection in the investigated patients is not related to contact with cats.
Given the unexpected prevalence of chorioretinal scars in the current investigation, more studies are necessary
to better understand the effect of toxoplasma infection on visual health and to choose appropriate treatment
for curing the disease.
