Background
A loop ileostomy can be constructed to temporarily maintain distal colonic anastomosis in colorectal surgery;
however, there is a lack of consensus on the outcome and Morbidity of loop ileostomy closure.
Objective
To present the outcome and morbidity of loop ileostomy closure in patients of a single center.
Methods
All the cases who underwent ileostomy closure for either gastrointestinal malignancy or infl ammatory bowel
disease during 2020 and 2021 were included. The data for the study was gained by reviewing the medical fi les
of patients, including demographic information, postoperative complications, intervention, readmission to
hospital, and duration of stay.
Results
Fifty cases who underwent ileostomy closure were included in this study. There was a gender predilection
towards males (66%). The patients’ age ranged between 15 and 79 years, with a mean of 47 years. Most of the
cases were overweight (38%), and there was a close correlation between BMI and complications, but it was not
signifi cant. However, ischemic heart disease was present in only three cases, but it was statistically signifi cant
for the arising complications. Regarding the primary pathology, rectal cancer was the most common (32%),
followed by ulcerative colitis (22%) and colon cancer (22%). In total, 22% of the cases faced complications, and
wound infection was the most common presented complication (63.6%). Among all surgical characteristics,
only length of hospital stay and postoperative complication time were correlated with complications.
Conclusion
Despite minimal complications, loop ileostomy can also provide a satisfactory result and may limit mortality.
